Once upon the time there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” said the farmer.

You know how it feels when you have discovered a new artist whose work speaks to you and energizes your world in the moment.
It is kind of a zen moment.
Perhaps it was a passing song on the radio and you have to find out the name of the artist.

It my case, last night, it was a postcard on a Starbucks's bulletin board.

Wow. Mollie Kellogg! You painted MY world!
Is this how visual art brings us together?
Helps us see the divine in one another, in ourselves, the common thread of humanity
without the language of words...

The following paintings are my favorite.

Mixed Media by Mollie Kellogg

I actually looked for the end of a rainbow once!

Not when I was a kid, but actually just a few years ago.

Gulp. I can't believe I am even admitting this.

I was driving home from work along the river and I saw a huge rainbow. I SWEAR the end of it was just a few blocks further...

... so I kept going instead of taking my turn to go home. I am slowing down and craning my neck, expecting to see a huge illuminated patch of ground...

I was NOT expecting a pot of gold!

I must have driven out of my way at least a mile before major sheepishness set in and I turned around and went home.

I so love Balboa Park. We go there weekly. It is full of museums, paths, theaters, fountains, pools, sculpture, people...The Fredric Roberts exhibit at MoPA (Museum of Photographic Arts) was delightful.
Here are a few examples of his work and here is his website.  http://www.fredricroberts.com/portfolio.html

When I listen to her she becomes
the narrator in "the Temple of My Familiar".

There is a mockingbird that lives outside our studio door who sings in many voices and my beloved listens deeply
Whimsically interpreting.
I hear her magic, she hears my silliness
we delight each other through the lens' of the moment...
Her magical thinking sometimes
saves me from myself.
Her imperfections compel me to celebrate everything about her, myself.
Everything becomes.... what is

Our journey is my teacher and I am a truly good student.

Tess and I spent the evening photographing at Balboa Park. I was delighted to capture this one. This is a straight shot from the camera with no editing or cropping. I can never get the imported photos to retain their clarity. The original reveals a crystal clear lotus and foliage surrounded by the misty reflection in the water. I will keep on learning about managing digital images. In my heart - I miss film. The darkroom, the process, the purity.

near the birch bark river trail
I remember
you
 clasping my hands
  and energy
 flying from my
   core.
light encircled our sacred
tree house
In the companionship of a
generous August moon
this trust, this love, this joy
this being.....
became
the landscape of
our
belonging

I love architectural photography.

Here is my attempt at capturing colors and textures that captivated me as I was driving through a small town in the midwest.

Nancy Wood 1932 -

You shall ask
What good are dead leaves
And I will tell you
They nourish the sore earth.

You shall ask
What reason is there for winter
And I will tell you
To bring about new leaves.

You shall ask
Why are the leaves so green
And I will tell you
Because they are rich with life.

You shall ask
Why must summer end
And I will tell you
So that the leaves can die.

Hokusai says

Hokusai says look carefully.
He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing

He says look forward to getting old.
He says keep changing,
you just get more who you really are.
He says get stuck, accept it, repeat
yourself as long as it is interesting.

He says keep doing what you love.

He says keep praying.

He says every one of us is a child,
every one of us is ancient
every one of us has a body.
He says every one of us is frightened.
He says every one of us has to find
a way to live with fear.

He says everything is alive --
shells, buildings, people, fish,
mountains, trees, wood is alive.
Water is alive.

Everything has its own life.

Everything lives inside us.

He says live with the world inside you.

He says it doesn't matter if you draw,
or write books. It doesn't matter
If you saw wood, or catch fish.
It doesn't matter if you sit at home
and stare at the ants on your veranda
or the shadows of the trees
and grasses in your garden.
It matters that you care.

It matters that you feel.

It matters that you notice.

It matters that life lives through you.

Contentment is life living through you.
Joy is life living through you.
Satisfaction and strength
is life living through you.

He says don't be afraid.
Don't be afraid.

Love, feel, let life take you by the hand.

Let life live through you.

Rumi

look at love
how it tangles
with the one fallen in love

look at spirit
how it fuses with earth
giving it new life

why are you so busy
with this or that or good or bad
pay attention to how things blend

why talk about all
the known and the unknown
see how the unknown merges into the known

why think separately
of this life and the next
when one is born from the last

look at your heart and tongue
one feels but deaf and dumb
the other speaks in words and signs

look at water and fire
earth and wind
enemies and friends all at once

the wolf and the lamb
the lion and the deer
far away yet together

look at the unity of this
spring and winter
manifested in the equinox

you too must mingle my friends
since the earth and the sky
are mingled just for you and me

be like sugarcane
sweet yet silent
don't get mixed up with bitter words

my beloved grows
right out of my own heart
how much more union can there be

This woman reminds me of Mary who was a part of my life and who is very special to my heart. And Mary is a splitting image of Eva Cassidy. Sometimes, in a blue moon we come across a person who touches our life in a way that is hard to describe.... connection... selfless compassion... and a deep desire to see her thrive and find beauty in her life... her soul touches me...
